It’s February and things are getting worse. At their Board meeting, TT decides to end the Rio Norte Line on March 31. Wesley Mouch’s assistant, Mr. Weatherby, attends the Board meeting. He wants TT to raise the union’s wages so that Wesley Mouch is popular enough to get votes and stay in power. TT wants to raise their rates, but needs the government’s approval. TT agrees to raise the union’s wages. Mr. Weatherby says TT will get their raised rates if they can get something on Hank Rearden. Jim meets with Lillian in order to get her help with Hank. Lillian meets Hank’s train and figures out Hank is having an affair with Dagny. Hank tells Lillian to divorce him or never speak about Dagny. Because Hank is free of guilt he experiences an “immense deliverance”.

Rearden experiences his first failure to deliver an order on time.
Keeping the Taggart Bridge operating is Dagny’s #1 priority.
Ragnar keeps all supplies except d’Anconia copper, which he sinks.
Ted Nielsen quits a week after the closing of the Rio Norte Line is announced.
Francisco proposes to Dagny when telling her about his ancestor, Sebastian.
Francisco has a “hero” to whom he has given his life.
