Yesterday, we looked at what tool is needed to continually renew a transformed mind. Today we will look at what actually happens when the mind is transformed.
I’m not looking for an abstract answer. I want to know EXACTLY what is changed.
For instance, when God cures a person of cancer…what actually happened? In order to determine what happened, we need to know the cause. What is the cause of cancer?
Cancer is the result of counterfeit DNA that is toxic. Every cell in your body is replicating DNA. Each cell has a reference DNA it uses to make new DNA. Also, every cell in your body is fixing one counterfeit DNA strand every nine seconds. Some of these counterfeit DNA’s are toxic, some are not. So, we all have “cancer”, but the body was created in such a way to combat it all the time.
When the reference DNA becomes toxic either through damage or replication, the cell will use it to replicate additional toxic DNA. Notice, the cell actually thinks it is doing a great job making a replication of the toxic DNA. In fact, the quicker and more effective the cell is at replicating the toxic DNA, the quicker the body will become sick.
Therefore, when God cures a person of cancer, He is removing and/or fixing toxic DNA.
Notice, knowing this shouldn’t take away from the awesomeness of the miracle healing. We haven’t determined how God did it.
Now, let’s get back to the mind…
Our mind is constantly considering thoughts. Some of these thoughts are healthy and some are toxic. The mind determines if the thought is healthy or toxic by comparing it to a reference. Just as DNA is a pattern made up millions of building blocks, our thought pattern is made up of many ideas and beliefs.
The value of the mind is its ability to maintain healthy thought patterns and replicate these patterns into behavior. However, this is a difficult task to maintain considering the volume of thoughts and our pre-disposition to pursue comfort. We like to stop thinking and just feel…some of us more than others.
Over time, this results in a toxic thought pattern (or two or three or…). Our reference thought pattern can become damaged to the point it is toxic. We can also make mistakes replicating the thought pattern into other areas with toxic effects. We can also accept thought patterns that aren’t healthy and aren’t toxic.
Notice, the focus isn’t on unique thoughts. While these are building blocks, they aren’t the ultimate cause of toxic behavior. Healthy thought patterns will instantly nullify toxic thoughts. If a person doesn’t have a healthy thought pattern, then their only way to insure healthy behavior is to constantly check every action that comes out. This will eventually wear out the individual. Now let’s answer our question…
When our mind is first transformed, what occurs is the toxic thought patterns (man's "thinking") are removed or fixed. This is done by God. How often have you heard someone say, “God really changed the way I thought” or “I used to think this way, but now…”?
Then the focus is on continually renewing your mind (like we saw yesterday) in order to stay healthy (God's thinking). The tool for continual renewal is contrastive thinking.
We need to constantly challenge and allow others to challenge our thought patterns with contrastive thinking.
Otherwise, we run the risk of accepting counterfeit thought patterns and replicating them in our actions.
