This year we are covering the four Gospel Accounts together in chronological order.
In the previous post, we covered Matthew 2:16-18. Here was the conclusion:
Herod had all the male children killed that were in Bethlehem that were two years and younger.
The sentence before Matthew 2:16-18 was:
"14 And he arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt;
15 and was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt did I call my son."
We will cover Herod's death in today's post...
Matthew 2
"19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying,
20 Arise and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead that sought the young child's life.
21 And he arose and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel."
(Again, an angel told Joseph to take Mary and Jesus to Egypt...and an angel told Joseph to bring Mary and Joseph back to Israel once Herod died. Verse 21 called Jesus "the young child". At most, Jesus would have been in Egypt ten years.)
(Notice, this passage was the fulfillment of what was stated previously in Matthew 2:15.
"14 And he arose and took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt;
15 and was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt did I call my son.")
(Verse 15 was a reference to the prophecy in Hosea 11:1.
"1 When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.")
"22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither; and being warned of God in a dream, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee,"
(Joseph saw that Herod's son was ruling over Judaea, so he withdrew to the north...)
"23 and came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophets, that he should be called a Nazarene.:
(Notice, this was spoken of by the prophets...not written. There was no written documentation of this prophecy.)
CONCLUSION
After Herod died, an angel told Joseph to return to Israel. Joseph settled in Nazareth.
